Oh the Places You’ll Go (If you could)

Life, as we know it has come to a complete standstill. Everyone is grounded. The last time I was on a plane was about 3 months ago. I was fortunate enough to go to Egypt right before travel bans were issued. When will I board a plane next? Only time will tell.

Who could have predicted a small virus could have such a large impact. Initially like many of us, I thought this would blow over. We had gone through SARS, MERS, and Ebola. I deluded myself in thinking, a month or so of staying at home, reducing outside contact and I could continue with my summer plans. As we saw the number of cases skyrocket exponentially, I had to face the reality. I would have to stay grounded for a lot longer. Travelling is a privilege many of us take for granted.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. Eventually vaccines will be made and COVID-19 will be conquered. The world will open up again. The world is starting to open up again. But what will travelling be like post COVID? Perhaps it’s time to re-think your travel plans.

Where will you visit? Will you continue to visit top travel destinations or will you be wary of going to crowded places? Maybe you will take this opportunity to visit some hidden gems, places less travelled. Countries that have successfully controlled the number of COVID-19 cases look appealing, like New Zealand for example.

You may think visiting a warmer destination is safer. Initially, many individuals thought the virus didn’t impact countries in warmer climates. I would be wary of this statement, at the time I am writing this blog the numbers have increased exponentially in countries like Brazil and India. The warmer countries are typically the ones more densely populated, which increases the spread of the virus.

How will airline operations change? In the beginning, they may board less people and keep every other seat free. With less people on board, will they increase airfare? Or will airfare decrease to lure back customers? When you arrive at your destination country will they require you to self isolate first? And when you come back home, will you have to self-isolate before going back to work?

It’s likely by the summer countries will start ramping up on tourism. Articles keep popping up of airlines offering flights to Italy, Greece, and Japan. Japan even hopes to encourage domestic travel by covering some of the travel expenses (and potentially lowering travel expenses for foreign travellers). If Canada could do that as well that would be great. Would love to take a trip to Banff once it is safe to do so! All in all, do some thorough research before deciding on your next destination country. Thread lightly in the post-COVID era.

I love science and travelling. Here I'll be talking about both (either separately or merged). Are you ready?
